Polythene Polythene PE is the kind of plastic that is used most av all plastics due to it's multifacity. Everyone get in contact with the material every day. Polythene could be both hard and soft and in both simple and complicated forms. The material can be found in toys, bottles, tubes and most of all as packagingmaterials. The biggest advantage with PE as packagingmaterial is that it is light, waterproof, tolerant towards hits, and easy to shape. The polythene comes as almost all plastic do, from oil or naturalgases. The crude oil is sublimed to ethene gas and the ethene gas to polythene at the polymerization. Through variating the density you can get different types of PE. All polythene is recyclable and can be used for products again. LDPE stands for LowDensity and is mainly used for plastic bags, sacks, grocery bags and shrink films. HDPE stands for HighDensity and is most of all used to make cans, toys, drink boxes but also to make grocery bags and plastic bags. In Mo Industri a larger part of the manufacturing consists of LDPE, but also HDPE just like MDPE which is a kind of mix of the both types.
